What is Craftom?

Craftom is where curious meets crafty.
There are a lot of people out there who are seeking a place to meet and make things with other people. This is that place, a true creative center.

For those of us looking to learn, Craftom is a global school. A playground, really. For those of us who create professionally, Craftom is a window of opportunity. Craftom enables users to advertise, search, discover, book, and pay for artisan workshops, demos, and open studios occurring in-person at physical locations around the world.

Use this platform to connect with skilled craftspeople for hands-on human experience. Learn to express yourself in previously unimaginable ways. Connect with students to expand and sustain your creative practice.

WHAT does Craftom do?
Learn in-person, not in virtual reality. Craftom connects creators, learners, and cultures for the purpose of preserving traditional skills, learning new ones, and providing artisan-teachers with a sustainable revenue stream.

Artisan-teachers are able to reach beyond their immediate community to attract new students, share their skills, and sustain their craft. The global community of student-travelers is able to search and discover previously inaccessible skills, and teachers.

However you choose to use it, Craftom gives you the chance to do things you’ve never done before, or couldn’t. You can do what you want, now.

WHO is Craftom for?
Craftom is for everyone, all walks of life. No matter who you are or where you come from, you are welcome to teach, earn, learn, share. Grow.

If you’re a teaching artist, Craftom helps you connect to students and earn more money by doing what you love.

Travelers, tourists, visitors: get to know the places you love through the people who shape it. If you graduated art school or any school, Craftom offers hands-on experience to complete your education.

WHY does Craftom do it?
We know first-hand how hard it can be to find and connect with teaching artists, especially when you’re looking to expand your horizons.

We also know teaching is a full-time job and creativity is a way of life. There is not always time for marketing, or self-promotion. We know so many artists who are having a hard time with their finances or wishing for more creative freedom. There is so much common ground amongst creatives.

The truth is, we can live well by teaching what we know. We can find and connect with craftspeople in our own communities, learn their names, see their work, and shake their hands. We can continue learning from each other in real life, in classrooms that we choose for ourselves.

No need to spend time marketing and promoting yourself. Craftom connects you to everything you need so you can be free to do what you dream.

Who is Craftom?
Craftom is the human touch.

Craftom is a culture of being willing and able to make things. It is a group of people who want to create together, to search for the skillsets that unite them and make them unique. It is a tool for unprecedented brainstorms and unlimited creations.

Craftom is reverence for materials. We recognize how important it is to be able to make things, to understand consumerism in terms of resources, time, and creative energy.

What is the future of Craftom?
Craftom’s database of creators ultimately becomes the Global Artisan Network, an online resource featuring artisans from all over the globe who offer their work, connect with students, and collaborate with each other.

The Global Artisan Network is the underlying structure for a rich cultural exchange beyond what one can learn in a traditional learning environment. Craftom will use the Global Artisan Network to help people in remote areas with ancient knowledge to preserve and pass it along, in person. The possibilities are endless:

Reimagine education.
Imagine Craftom after school. Give young people valuable skills in hands-on learning environments with bonafide experts.

Reimagine apprenticeship.
Imagine using Craftom to trade work in a studio for room and board. Find internships with real practitioners to complement your formal education.

Reimagine your creative practice.
Imagine your dream studio. A consistently full classroom can provide enough revenue for consistent access to creative space, and beyond.

Who is Alexandra Negoita?
Alexandra Negoita is a teaching artist in the Hudson Valley. She first showed her entrepreneurial streak when she signed up for a local art school in the fifth grade, unbeknownst to her parents. She drew and painted every day after school for four hours, three times a week. It wasn’t just a hobby. It was love.

Alexandra attended technical school where she learned to program Jacquard looms for fine silk work before gaining admission to the esteemed Bucharest National University of Arts in Romania. She practiced architectural drawing and studied stage and costume design for film & theater. Given the political climate at the time, Alexandra applied to leave the country and was subsequently denied the right to work by the Romanian government. She made a living by making things. Her studio became her passion and her livelihood.

In 1985 she met her future husband and lifelong collaborator Rolando Negoita who taught her silversmithing, enameling, and jewelry making. In 1990, they arrived in Chelsea, New York and worked for a jewelry company until they were able to open their own studio: A&R Design. Together they did fashion jewelry and accessory, for high-end brands like Giorgio Armani, Liz Claiborne, Burberry of London, Polo Ralph Lauren, and more. They left the city in 2001 in search of more space and less stress. Alexandra learned digital photography and started working with galleries to advertise their creative inventory, while Rolando was teaching product design and metalsmithing at Parsons School of Design

Today, Alexandra is able to do a lot of things. She currently teaches jewelry making, painting, perspective, and charcoal drawing. Sometime during 2016 she was struck by a big idea, one that wouldn’t let her sleep at night. She finally surrendered and shared it with her peers. Conversations with other creators turned into Craftom, an easy way to teach or learn something new, creative, and hands-on. She is currently the company’s founder, CEO, and first resident artist.
